Diabetes/Insulin Resistance

Here at IMMC Health, the health of our diabetes and insulin resistant patients is of utmost importance. Insulin resistance occurs when the body’s cells are resistant to the insulin naturally produced by the pancreas. The pancreas will begin to secrete more and more insulin to make up for the body’s resistance, but over time, there simply is not enough insulin to remove all of the sugars from the blood stream. Eventually, insulin resistance can lead to the development of Type 2 Diabetes if left untreated.

Although there are drugs designed to lower blood sugar levels and increase the body’s acceptance of insulin production, many carry side effects and do not address the conditions that foster the disease. We believe that by treating lifestyle factors, like obesity, diet and activity levels, diabetic and insulin resistant patients can manage, and even reverse the disease that affects more than 70 million Americans.

Treatment Services

Weight Management:
Weight plays an important role in management of adult and juvenile diabetes. Here at IMMC Health, we know that one of the fastest ways to lower your Type 2 Diabetes blood sugar levels is by dropping some weight. In fact, according to the National Institute of Health, even borderline diabetics are 58 percent less likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes if they simply lose excess body fat. Furthermore, individuals who are already suffering from Type 2 Diabetes are often able to stop taking insulin and other diabetic medications by achieving a healthy body weight.

Lifestyle Changes:
Lifestyle changes play an important role in treating the cause of diabetes. For example, nutritious, low-calorie foods that are unprocessed help with weight loss, as does a habit of regular cardiovascular exercise. On the other hand, eating foods high in sugar, sodium and fats will only worsen the condition, as will maintaining a sedentary lifestyle. Here at IMMC Health, we teach our diabetic and insulin resistant patients to make life-long lifestyle changes that will help control blood sugar levels and prevent the dangers that diabetes presents to long term health.

The Joselin Approach:
The Joselin Approach is a diabetic and insulin resistance care technique designed by the Joselin Clinic, a 100-year old diabetic research and treatment facility that focuses on comprehensive diabetic health care. The Joselin Approach involves incorporating expert care in multiple health fields to provide total-body care to diabetic patients who need more than just glucose monitoring.

Instead, the Joselin Approach treats pediatric and adult diabetes and all of its components, including eye degeneration, kidney disease, circulatory problems and mental health issues. It works well alongside our approach to lifestyle changes and weight management by encouraging patients to follow the advice of physical fitness professionals and dieticians to manage the disease.
